About the Farm

Background

Founded in 2003, Pennypack Farm & Education Center emerged from the dedication of a few citizens inspired by a newspaper letter advocating for a community farm. Initially a nutrient-depleted cornfield, the farm has transformed into a model of sustainable agricultural practices, now nourishing around 3,500 individuals annually. The farm operates on land leased from The College Settlement of Philadelphia, an organization established in 1889 that has provided camping opportunities to economically disadvantaged children since 1922.

Practices

Pennypack Farm & Education Center employs organic farming methods to produce fresh, healthy food. The farm emphasizes building soil health, preserving open space, and protecting ecosystem health. Their philosophy includes practicing sustainability in farming, buildings, and energy production, and maintaining farming as a viable occupation. The farm also focuses on environmental education and strengthening community relationships.

The Rest

Pennypack Farm & Education Center engages with children, families, community groups, and educational institutions to foster awareness and create sustainable local food systems. They offer a variety of educational programs, including a community-supported agriculture demonstration project, and provide approximately 25,000 pounds of produce to local food pantries annually. The farm also runs collaborative camp programs to offer farm experiences to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
