About the Farm
Background
Phil's Farm, located in Bowdoinham, Maine, was founded by Phil Cuddeback, whose passion for agriculture began during his college years at Bowdoin. Immersed in a supportive local food community and disillusioned by industrialized farming, Phil's journey took him to farms across Maine, Nicaragua, California, Boston, and New York City. Over the years, Phil has continued to explore and learn new facets of agriculture, driven by a deep love for farming and a fondness for pigs, which is reflected in the farm's logo.
Practices
Phil's Farm operates on 5 acres of certified organic land, focusing on soil health as the cornerstone of their farming philosophy. By nurturing healthy soil, they grow nutritious and flavorful vegetables while protecting crops from pests and extreme weather. The farm employs minimal pesticide use, avoids disposable plastic mulch, and reduces plastic packaging. Practices such as spreading compost, planting cover crops, and fostering pollinator habitats are integral to their approach, aiming to grow food in harmony with the natural world and mitigate climate change through carbon storage in the soil.
The Rest
Phil's Farm offers a CSA program with pickups in Portland, Bowdoinham, and Portsmouth, NH, emphasizing affordability and accessibility of local organic food. Customers can select from a variety of vegetables each week, and the CSA is promoted as the most cost-effective way to access their produce. Additionally, their vegetables are available at Portland Whole Foods and through Daybreak Grower's Alliance.
