About the Farm

Background

In 2014, Nurya, Mike, and Bethany envisioned Plainsong Farm, and by 2015, Mike and Bethany moved to the property, transforming it into a productive farm for the first time since the 1980s. By 2017, the farm held its first on-farm worship services and connected with Adamah Farm. In 2018, the farm facilitated FaithLands/ChurchLands gatherings, bringing together land access professionals and religious leaders. Plainsong Farm became a separately incorporated non-profit organization in 2019, welcoming its first young adult residents. The local Good News Gardens program started in 2020, and the young adult program joined the Episcopal Service Corps. In 2021, the farm launched a new website and logo, and by 2022, the board of directors purchased the 12 acres and two houses on a seller-financed mortgage.

Practices

All crops are grown from USDA organic seeds without synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers. The farm employs compost, cover crops, and crop rotation to maintain soil health. Livestock, including heritage breeds of chickens, turkeys, and pigs, are pasture-raised and fed non-GMO feed. The farm also donates CSA shares and fresh produce to local food pantries in collaboration with local churches and farm subscribers.

The Rest

Plainsong Farm offers a 20-week CSA share program from June through October with pick-ups in Rockford and Grand Rapids. The farm operates as a living laboratory for farm-based environmental education and Christian discipleship, cultivating connections between people, places, and God. The farm's experiential programs cater to all ages and include worship services, field trips, and volunteer opportunities. Plainsong Farm is affiliated with the Episcopal Church and draws inspiration from the Benedictine tradition of sung prayer. The farm's mission is supported by a community of donors and funders, with over 70% of revenue coming from these sources.
