About the Farm
Background
Established in 2005, Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery is Illinois' first farmstead goat dairy, located in Champaign-Urbana. Known for its high-quality cheeses and gelato, the farm has been certified Animal Welfare Approved since 2010, ensuring the humane treatment of its goats.
Practices
The farm milks 60-70 Nubian and La Mancha does seasonally from March through December. The goats graze on diverse perennial grass, legume, and forbs pasture, and also browse on nutritious tree leaves in a system known as 'silvopasture,' which is recognized for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The farm adheres to the strict standards of Animal Welfare Approved by 'A Greener World,' allowing livestock to express their natural behaviors.
The Rest
In addition to cheese, the farm produces goat milk gelato with seasonal flavors using fruits and herbs grown on-site. They also maintain a small organic fruit orchard and vegetable garden. Visitors can enjoy seasonal 'Dinners on the Farm,' spring farm breakfasts, summer open houses, educational tours, goat yoga, and goat hikes. The farm offers a Farm Club Membership and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, providing fresh bread and cheese weekly.
