About the Farm
Background
Since 1985, Quaker Farm has been an integral part of Alcona County's agricultural community, specializing in pasture raised heritage breed livestock and heirloom produce. The farm has been featured on Animal Planet and the Discovery Network, gaining recognition for its pasture raised lamb and heirloom pumpkins. Over the decades, the farm has become known for its dedication to traditional skills and arts of sustainable living, which are shared through Living Arts classes and workshops as part of a Christian agricultural stewardship ministry of Quaker Monastery.
Practices
Quaker Farm employs traditional homesteading techniques and sustainable agricultural practices. All products are chemical and hormone-free. The farm raises a variety of livestock including Nubian Dairy Goats, Cotswold Sheep, and Border Leicester sheep, and produces heirloom pumpkins, winter squash, raw honey, and free range eggs. The farm also offers raw wool fleece, wool locks, and wool roving. Their farming philosophy emphasizes the interconnectedness of farming practices, ecology, and human health, ensuring that the land is treated with respect and care.
The Rest
Quaker Farm offers a range of Living Arts Workshops, including fiber craft, soap making, cheese and yogurt making, bread baking, sustainable gardening, and medicinal herb craft. The Farm Shoppe is open by appointment from June to October, and the farm also sells AKC Rough Collie dogs. Quaker Anne's Children's Stories about life on a farm are available online for free, providing educational content for young readers. The farm participates in the Alcona County Quilt Trail Project, commemorating the Underground Railroad with a quilt block featuring the 'North Star' design. The Quaker Kitchen offers free food recipes and video cooking classes, promoting healthy farm-style cooking and homesteading skills.
