About the Farm
Background
Located under stately ancient live oak trees near Bardin, Florida, this small facility emphasizes 'quality' over 'quantity'. The farm's focus on goats began in 1999, although the owner has a lifetime of animal husbandry experience. The name 'Rachelsie' merges the names of the owner and her daughter. The herd has grown from a modest beginning to 24 animals, moving from an acre homestead on the St. Johns River to a spacious farm with goat-specific facilities.
Practices
Milking does are fed a natural grain mix and have free choice alfalfa/orchard grass hay transported from an organic farm in Indiana. The herd is TB/Brucellosis certified and accredited, participates in the fifth-year Voluntary Scrapies Eradication Program, and is on DHI-Milk Test during the milking season. The farm maintains two ADGA Registered show herds: Oberhasli and LaMancha. The facilities include large paddocks under shady live oak trees and a 1800 sqft kid nursery with individual kidding stalls that convert into 'baby pens' with drop-down heat lamps.
The Rest
Fresh and frozen raw milk is available from February to October in sterile gallon and half-gallon plastic jugs, sold for pet consumption only per Florida law. The farm also produces goat milk products such as glycerin base and cold process soaps, feta cheese, cheese spreads, butter, and fudge. The Sundried Tomato & Herb Marinated Feta won Reserve Best In Show at the 2011 ADGA National Convention Cheese Competition. The farm is home to a variety of animals including dogs, chickens, ducks, horses, and a barn cat, creating a harmonious environment that helps the goats remain calm at shows. The farm is active on Facebook, providing updates and news.
