About the Farm
Background
Established in 2012, Rains and Sun Hilltop Farm is a small, 13-acre family farm located in the rolling hills of Northern Kentucky. Known for its commitment to organic farming, the farm is certified by the KY Department of Agriculture. The Raines Family—Steve, Anna, and their three children—have dedicated themselves to growing a diverse array of vegetables and building a strong community connection through their CSA program and farmers' market presence.
Practices
The farm is USDA certified organic and a member of the Organic Association of KY. They emphasize sustainable vegetable production by working with nature for pest control, enriching the soil with cover crops and compost, and minimizing their environmental impact through minimal tillage and small-scale, local production. Their philosophy is rooted in the belief that these practices yield the healthiest and highest quality produce.
The Rest
CSA shares are available from May to November, with options for full weekly shares or half biweekly shares, and can be picked up at various locations in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell Counties or delivered to your home. The farm also participates in the Independence Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings and the Ft. Thomas Farmers' Market on Wednesday afternoons. The biggest piece of equipment they own is a 2-wheel tractor, underscoring their commitment to appropriate technology for sustainability.
