About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2011 on a formerly vacant one-acre lot in downtown Raleigh, this nonprofit urban farm believes in the power of urban farms to create healthier communities and reconnect city dwellers with healthy food production. The farm was established to transform vacant lots into productive farmland, providing an amenity from an eyesore. Over the years, it has become a place where all community members can learn about farming and sustainable agriculture.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative agriculture practices to steward the land and promote the health and well-being of both individuals and the community. They focus on growing accessible and affordable local food, fostering innovation and sustainable practices among farmers, and building partnerships to increase mission impact. The farm is committed to addressing racial and gender inequities and promoting economic equity for farmers. Their practices include composting, permaculture, and other sustainable methods to maintain the farm site.
The Rest
The farm offers delivery to certain parts of Raleigh and sells fresh produce, eggs, and dairy at The Farmstand every Saturday. They engage the community through workshops, tours, special events, and volunteer opportunities. The farm also provides a beautiful space for gathering, sharing, and learning, and is dedicated to supporting food access and insecurity through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. Key team members include Lisa Grele Barrie, Maria Williford, Colleen Yeager, and Shy Palmer, each bringing unique skills and passions to the farm's mission.
