About the Farm
Background
Located along the Snake River canyon in south-central Idaho, the land was originally settled by the family's great-grandfather in the 1940s. Today, as fourth-generation farmers, the family continues to innovate while maintaining agricultural traditions. A decade ago, the youngest generation returned to the farm, leading to the implementation of minimum and strip-till technology and the expansion to include livestock in 2012.
Practices
The farm plants half its land with multi-species non-GMO cover crops annually to improve soil health and reduce synthetic fertilizer use. These cover crops provide grazing for Red Devon cattle, Red Wattle pigs, and Red Ranger chickens, which are raised without hormones and antibiotics. The farm combines new technology with historical practices, using GPS and strip-till implements alongside heritage livestock grazing on non-GMO pastures. The use of cover crops maintains year-round soil cover, increases soil fertility, and reduces pesticide use, contributing to healthier soils and controlled erosion.
The Rest
Red Star Ranch offers individual cuts, curated boxes of beef, pork, or combination boxes, and custom selections. The farm is committed to providing healthy, antibiotic-free meat and shares its products through local markets and an online store. The family is dedicated to ensuring customers feel confident about the quality and origins of their food.
