About the Farm
Background
Founded with a mission to support a resilient, interconnected local food system, Reno Food Systems has become known for its diverse 5-acre teaching farm. Over the years, they have donated thousands of seedlings to community gardens, provided free produce to community partners, and delivered prepared meals to those in need. They have also hosted numerous workshops and farm events, educating the public on various aspects of sustainable farming and food systems.
Practices
Reno Food Systems employs regenerative farming practices, focusing on soil health and minimizing carbon footprint. They use solar power, turn yard waste into fertile soil, and distribute food within a 10-mile radius. Their farming methods include using chickens for soil aeration and pest control, and they cultivate a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and pollinator plants. The farm also emphasizes education on regenerative farming, cooking, nutrition, and the use of medicinal plants.
The Rest
The farm offers a range of activities for the community, including U-Pick days, volunteering opportunities, and workshops. They host a mobile farmers market and events like the Reno Garlic Fest. The on-site farm stand sells fresh produce and seedlings, and they engage with hundreds of volunteers annually. Reno Food Systems also supports SNAP, WIC, and Senior Nutrition Program participants, ensuring access to nutrient-dense food.
