About the Farm
Background
Over the past decade, this inter-generational farm has become known for its dedication to permaculture ethics and regenerative agriculture. Although they have sold the farm and are moving to York County, their legacy includes a commitment to the Susquehanna river valley and a vision for a more just and ecologically beautiful world.
Practices
The farm practices permaculture, regenerative agriculture, and land restoration. They focus on improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and enhancing the beauty of the farm. Adaptive grazing is used to mimic the natural movement of herbivores, providing fresh grass daily and improving soil carbon and health. Silvopasture integrates hundreds of trees into pastures for shade, food, and soil fertility. Perennial polycultures include fruit and nut trees in diverse food systems, sequestering carbon and feeding the soil. Contour swales manage water flow, prevent erosion, and hydrate plants and animals.
The Rest
The farm follows the three main ethics of permaculture: care of the Earth, care for people, and fair distribution of wealth. They strive to build deeper connections with the land and community, actively addressing inequities in food, money, and power distribution. Their practices have a direct positive impact on the Susquehanna river valley, and they aim to create opportunities for others to be involved in the work and culture of growing food.
