About the Farm
Background
Santa Rosa plantation dates back to the 17th century, with the current plantation house built in 1840. The plantation has a long history of beekeeping, with records of bees and hives dating back to the will of Captain James Gee in 1760. During the Civil War, the plantation served as a Union headquarters and field hospital, and its history is marked by significant events such as the Confederate cavalry's capture of Union cattle in 1864.
Practices
Santa Rosa Honey Farm maintains a focus on beekeeping, producing wildflower honey and selling bee nucs. The bees are managed by beekeeper Christopher White, who ensures the health and productivity of the hives. The farm uses wax frames for the bee nucs, and the bees are actively bringing in nectar and pollen, drawing out comb, and supporting brood development.
The Rest
Santa Rosa Honey Farm offers local delivery and free delivery to Richmond on Saturdays. They also ship honey by mail with shipping costs invoiced separately. The farm engages with the community, including educational visits to schools, and emphasizes the importance of protecting bee habitats. Customers can purchase honey and bee nucs through PayPal.
