About the Farm
Background
Kevin and Laurie Savage both grew up on dairy farms, with Kevin in Montgomery County and Laurie in Frederick County. Laurie received her first Jersey calf in 1982, which marked the beginning of her 4-H cow project. The couple married in 1997 and established their farm in Dickerson, Maryland. Their children, Catherine and James, also developed a passion for farming, contributing to the farm's growth and success. In 2022, they launched Brown Cow Creamery, producing cheese from their own cows' milk.
Practices
The farm employs grassfed practices for their cows, ensuring a natural diet and healthy living conditions. They grow corn and small grains, which are milled into whole grain flours on-site. A local distiller uses their grain, and the byproducts are recycled back into the cows' diet. They participate in the Million Acre Challenge, aiming to use healthy soil techniques on one million agricultural acres in Maryland by 2030. A nutrient management plan is in place to oversee the application of nutrients to their land.
The Rest
Savage Acres offers free delivery to Poolesville and surrounding areas, and farm pick-up is available by appointment. They donate products to local food banks via Manna Food Center and participate in the Farm to Food Bank program. The farm produces a variety of products including grassfed beef and pork, artisan colby and cheddar cheeses, and freshly milled cornmeals and flours.
