About the Farm

Background

The Science Barge, developed by NY Sun Works and acquired by Groundwork Hudson Valley in October 2008, serves as an environmental education center. Docked in downtown Yonkers, it has been a public education destination since its inception, showcasing renewable energy supporting sustainable food production.

Practices

The Science Barge operates completely off the grid, utilizing solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels to generate all necessary energy. Its hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected rainwater and purified river water, ensuring zero runoff. The farm grows a variety of produce, including tomatoes, melons, greens, and lettuce, without the use of pesticides.

The Rest

The Science Barge is open to the public on weekends with a suggested donation of $5, free for children 10 years old and younger. It also offers weekly educational programs for schools, camps, and groups. Weekend hours are from mid-April to November, Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6pm.
