About the Farm
Background
Bob and Colleen moved to south central Kentucky in June 2015, driven by a desire to simplify their lives and connect more deeply with nature. They adopted the permaculture method of raising animals and vegetables, initially aiming for self-sustainability. Over time, they began selling their surplus eggs, which quickly gained a loyal customer base due to their superior taste and nutritional value. The demand for their pasture-raised meat birds soon followed, leading to a thriving business.
Practices
The homestead operates on 50 acres, with 35 acres of woods and 15 acres of pasture. All laying hens and meat birds are raised on pasture and supplemented with local Non-GMO grains containing no soy products. The pastures are chemical-free, maintained naturally by the animals, including chickens, pigs, and some cattle. The woods provide an ideal environment for raising hogs, whose diet of nut trees imparts a unique flavor to the pork. The farm emphasizes transparency, encouraging visitors to see firsthand the care and natural methods used in raising their animals.
The Rest
The farm offers tours for visitors to see the operation and meet the animals, making it a great educational experience for families. Their eggs boast higher Omega-3 levels, less fat, and more vitamins compared to store-bought eggs. The farm's philosophy rejects government-mandated organic labels, opting instead for practices they believe are better for the land and animals. They describe their approach as 'beyond organic' and prioritize transparency and customer trust.
