About the Farm
Background
Established in 2006, the CSA in Belmont began with 25 members and operates on one acre of the six-acre Sergi Farm near the Cambridge Belmont boundary. Belmont Acres Farm, located at the Richardson Farm Historic District in Belmont, Massachusetts, has been Belmont's local farm for over 10 years. It is run by Mike and Hermik Chase, who have backgrounds in Environmental Biology and Public Health, respectively. Their daughter also contributes to the farm's operations.
Practices
Belmont Acres Farm adheres to organic methods, though it is not organically certified. The farm emphasizes an integrated approach to sustainable agriculture, focusing on disease-resistant cultivars and responsible use of technology. The farm prioritizes the health of the soil and the ecosystem, allowing nature to guide their practices. They believe in the importance of knowing your farmer and understanding how food is grown, moving beyond conventional and organic regulatory definitions.
The Rest
Belmont Acres Farm operates a CSA and a farm stand, offering over 40 different vegetables and herbs from June to October. CSA shares cost $400 and are available for pick-up on Tuesdays. The farm is deeply involved in the local community, working with school systems and various organizations to promote sustainable agriculture and healthy eating. The farm also offers detailed tours and engages with the community to build strong, food-centered relationships.
