About the Farm
Background
In 1975, Chris Kurth's family moved to a nineteenth-century Sudbury farmhouse, where Chris grew up tending gardens and farm animals. After studying biology, philosophy, and environmental studies at Williams College, Chris started a five-acre CSA farm in 1998, which evolved into a larger operation named Siena Farms in 2005. Over the last nineteen years, the farm has grown to 75 acres, serving CSA members, chefs, and retail customers year-round in Boston's South End and at the Boston Public Market.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative agricultural practices, avoiding chemical herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers. Soil fertility is enhanced through natural composts, cover crops, and mineral amendments. Although the farm has chosen to forgo USDA organic certification, it adheres to methods on par with current organic standards, focusing on soil health to improve the flavor, nutrition, and storage quality of its produce.
The Rest
The farm offers unique programs like the Kids’ Farm Share to engage children with their food, and the Market Card program for retail customers. It collaborates with top regional chefs to develop crop varietal selections and harvest techniques, aiming to grow high-quality produce and contribute to a vibrant local food economy. The farm also provides Community Sponsored Farm Shares and Employer Sponsored Farm Shares to expand access to its produce.
