About the Farm
Background
Singing Frogs Farm, located in the Atascadero valley bottom of the Russian River Watershed, has been recognized for its innovative, regenerative farming systems. Since its inception, the farm has received numerous awards, including the North American 2010 Farmer Rancher Award for Pollinator Conservation. The land, traditionally stewarded by the Kashaya Pomo and Coastal Miwok Peoples, is now a thriving example of ecological farming that honors its historical roots while pushing forward sustainable practices.
Practices
The farm employs a no-till, hand-labor farming approach, avoiding the use of tractors and rototillers to preserve soil health and biodiversity. This method enhances soil microorganisms, organic matter, and plant health, benefiting native wildlife such as ground-nesting bees and snakes. The farm also uses no sprays, not even organic ones, to maintain a healthy ecosystem. Hedgerows and natural areas are utilized to increase wildlife habitat, particularly for pollinators. The farm's soil management practices have significantly increased soil organic matter, leading to healthier crops and more nutrient-dense food.
The Rest
Singing Frogs Farm is home to a variety of domesticated animals, including free-range hens for eggs and pest control, rare Soay sheep for rotational grazing, a milking goat, a farm dog, and barn cats. The farm also manages a wide array of fruit trees and blueberry bushes, ensuring a year-round supply of fresh produce. The farm's commitment to ecological balance means that even the children can safely run through the fields, eating produce directly from the plants.
