About the Farm

Background

Established around 1820 during a settlement boom in the coastal fishing and farming community, the farm overlooks Cobscook Bay in Pembroke, Maine, on Passamoquoddy homeland. The farm is protected by a conservation easement from Maine Coast Heritage Trust and adjoins conserved lands. Historically, Cobscook Bay was a highly productive marine ecosystem with numerous canneries and steamships to Boston.

Practices

The farm employs certified organic practices, fertilizing gardens with seaweed and organic cow manure. Plantings are arranged 'on contour' in the agro-forestry style, with vegetable gardens interspersed. They wild harvest a variety of plants and seaweeds, and raise oysters and kelp via Limited Purpose Aquaculture Licenses. The farm is certified organic by MOFGA and the Real Organic Project, and is Better Bee Certified by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.

The Rest

The farm hosts workshops, camps, and agritourists via Airbnb and Hipcamp, offering stays in campsites, tipis, restored farmhouses, and yurts. Guests can use the community kitchen, borrow bikes and kayaks, explore trails, and attend movies and workshops. The farm has expanded to include historic buildings like 'Reversing Hall' and the 'Pennamaquan Museum of Natural Futures.' They produce value-added products such as vinegars, teas, jams, salves, and their award-winning Seaweed Sprinkle in a certified commercial kitchen called 'The Minke.'
