About the Farm
Background
Located in Randolph County, Alabama, Sneaky Crow Farm has a mission to provide locally grown vegetables and fruits to customers in East Alabama and West Georgia. The farm is known for its wide variety of crops, including beans, peas, tomatoes, onions, garlic, sweet and white potatoes, cabbage, collards, spinach, lettuce, okra, kale, turnip greens, peppers, squash, zucchini, rutabagas, blueberries, strawberries, muscadines, eggplant, and melons. The farm markets its produce at local farmers markets and is constructing a roadside stand for direct sales. The name 'Sneaky Crow Farm' originated from an incident where crows were found attacking nearly ripe watermelons, leading to the memorable name.
Practices
All crops are grown using organic methods, with a strong emphasis on soil health and water conservation. Micro-irrigation (drip irrigation) and plastic mulch are used to conserve water, and rainwater is harvested for vegetable transplant production. Cover crops such as ryegrass, clover, turnips, and peas are planted in the fall to prevent soil erosion and add nitrogen and organic matter to the soil. Organic soil amendments like fish emulsions, compost, green manures, straw, greensand, and rock minerals are used to build up the soil. A high tunnel or hoop house extends the growing season for crops like tomatoes and beans, while cold-tolerant crops such as spinach, carrots, beets, onions, broccoli, Swiss chard, arugula, and salad greens are grown during the winter months. The farm is committed to methods that do not damage the soil, water, or the environment.
The Rest
Sneaky Crow Farm harvests and markets most of its produce on the same day, ensuring freshness that big retailers cannot match. The farm supports governmental efforts to protect the food supply and believes in the consumer's right to know where and how their food is grown, handled, and sold. The farm also saves seeds, such as okra seeds, to improve crop quality year after year. Crows, despite their occasional mischief, are left unharmed as they play a role in maintaining environmental balance by eating insects.
