About the Farm

Background

Entering its 12th year, the farm has grown from less than a quarter acre in 2004 to over 10 acres by 2010. Founded by Margaret Ann Toohey and David Snow after gaining experience in organic agriculture across various states and countries, the farm has become a staple in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham communities, supplying CSA shares and produce to local markets and restaurants. The land, rich in history, was used by the Mississippian people over 700 years ago and has been an agricultural site since prehistoric times.

Practices

Utilizing some of the finest soils, the farm nurtures the soil food web with cover crops and earthworm castings, producing vegetables with utmost flavor. The farm ensures high-quality produce by harvesting, washing, and selling within 24 hours. The ecological mix of wooded hills, coves, ridges, forested swamp, and bottomland pasture supports native species and contributes to the farm's scenic landscape. The bottomland soil, known as 'Tuscaloosa Choccolocco,' is fertile and has been deposited over millennia through flood events.

The Rest

The farm sells its produce at various farmers' markets, including Pepper Place, Tuscaloosa River Market, and Homegrown Alabama Farmer's Markets. Future plans include diversifying with a perennial fruit orchard, an heirloom seed-saving garden, and enhancements for biodiversity and wildlife habitat, such as bird and bat houses and mixed species hedgerows to support native bees and beneficial insects.
