About the Farm

Background

Soul Food Project, originally Temple Gardens, was founded in 2017 by Danielle Guerin to increase food access in her neighborhood. Since its inception, the organization has expanded its reach, teaching youth and adults how to grow food and establishing a network of urban farms throughout Indianapolis. The farm is dedicated to creating a sustainable food system, improving food security, and enhancing the socio-economic status of local residents.

Practices

Operating on three vacant lots around Indianapolis, the farm employs organic no-till methods to cultivate the land. This approach minimizes soil disturbance, promotes soil health, and enhances biodiversity. Chickens are also raised on one of the lots, contributing to the farm's integrated ecosystem. The farm's practices are rooted in service and equity, focusing on food justice and sovereignty through growing, distributing, cooking, and eating.

The Rest

The farm offers several community-centered programs, including the Veggie Box program, which provides affordable fresh produce and educates participants on food seasonality and recipes. Workforce development initiatives like Youth Grow Indy and the Farm Fellow Apprenticeship cultivate leadership and agricultural skills among participants. The farm also serves as a space for community gathering and celebration, fostering stronger community ties and engaged citizenship.
