About the Farm
Background
Farmer Pete Ambrose began shrimping in 1967 and expanded into farming on Wadmalaw Island in 1976. The family has been dedicated to working the land and waterways, bringing the Lowcountry's bounty to residents and visitors. Stono Market started as an open-air market and packing shed in 1987, offering produce grown at the family farm to bridge the 'farm to table' gap. The Tomato Shed Café evolved in 1992 from Babs' love for cooking, and in 2013, Barbara Ambrose became the second-generation co-owner.
Practices
The farm focuses on organic farming methods, producing raw cow and goat milk, and pastured eggs. The produce is grown on Wadmalaw Island and brought to the market, ensuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients for their café and market.
The Rest
The Tomato Shed Café offers a chef-inspired menu featuring locally grown foods and ingredients from around the Carolinas. The café is known for its classic Southern country cooking, with dishes like roast pork, beef, barbecue, tomato pie, squash casserole, collards, and butter beans. The café also sells the day's freshest catch of shrimp. It serves as a community hub where visitors can meet, catch up on local news, and enjoy good Southern cooking.
