About the Farm

Background

The Bredthauers began their journey into bison farming in 1994 after moving to a 320-acre pasture in Broken Bow, NE. Initially inspired by a family vacation and extensive reading, they purchased their first buffalo and gradually expanded their herd. Over the years, they developed innovative ways to market their meat, including building a mobile store. Today, they maintain a herd of around 100 animals and have cultivated a loyal customer base.

Practices

The farm employs Restoration Agriculture techniques, focusing on building soil fertility through rotational grazing and avoiding chemical inputs. Soil health is regularly monitored through testing. The bison are fed high-quality grasses, mineral supplements, and apple cider vinegar, which has eliminated the need for medical treatments over the past eight years. No vaccinations, growth hormones, or antibiotics are used. Humane field harvest methods are utilized to minimize stress before slaughter.

The Rest

The farm markets its products through a Log Cabin Mobile Store, which travels to farmers' markets and is parked at the ranch when not in use. Visitors are welcome but should call ahead. In addition to frozen meat, they offer freeze-dried raw meat and organ meat chunks for pets, bone broth, and purified tallow for cooking or skincare. The farm's journey has been marked by challenges and hard work, but it remains a family endeavor that brings them joy and allows them to share their way of life with others.
