About the Farm
Background
In 1910, Frederick Feldt moved from Dutch Hollow to the present valley of the Sulzer Family Farm, initially focusing on dairy and cheese production. His son, Ben Feldt, transitioned the farm to beef production, inspired by a Western Ranch vision. The farm, located along the Illinois Central & Gulf railroad, made cattle transport straightforward. Ben's son Wally Feldt and son-in-law Hans Sulzer expanded the operation, purchasing feeder calves from South Dakota. Mike Sulzer, the fourth generation, continues the tradition, producing about 125 spring market cattle annually.
Practices
Mike Sulzer employs rotational grazing, composting, and natural soil conditioning. The cattle, predominantly Angus with some Hereford, Charolais, and Simmental crossbreeds, graze on pastures from spring to late fall and are fed alfalfa hay and silage in winter. The diet includes up to 10% pure shelled non-GMO corn. The farm emphasizes humane treatment, a forage-based diet, and maintaining high CLA levels in the beef through natural feeding practices. The cattle are neither vaccinated nor given antibiotics, growth hormones, or GMO feeds.
The Rest
Mike Sulzer is a director of the Green County Beef Producers and actively promotes beef and sustainable agriculture locally. The farm aims to blend exceptional taste with healthier animal fats for optimal nutrition while respecting animals and nature. The beef is known for its superb taste quality, attributed to the Angus marbling and the farm's unique feeding practices.
