About the Farm
Background
Located in Trumansburg, NY, Sweet Land Farm is part of an area rich in farming history and currently experiencing an agricultural revival. Sharing property boundaries with a certified organic grain farm, Sweet Land Farm has embraced a spirit of cooperation and neighborliness. The farm is known for its summer and winter CSA programs, offering members a close connection to their food and the land.
Practices
Sweet Land Farm uses only certified organic inputs and OMRI approved products, though it does not pursue organic certification. Instead, it holds a Certified Naturally Grown status, a peer-to-peer certification. The farm dedicates a third of its acreage to annual vegetables, with additional land for perennial and bi-annual fruits, and the remainder for cover crops. The farm's philosophy centers on soil health, achieved through crop rotation and the use of cover crops like sunflowers, sun hemp, peas, and sudan grass. These cover crops are tilled back into the soil to enhance organic matter and recycle nutrients, fostering a thriving ecosystem.
The Rest
Sweet Land Farm emphasizes community involvement through its CSA model, encouraging members to see themselves as part of a larger agricultural community. The farm offers full-season internships for those serious about a career in farming. Members enjoy unlimited pick-your-own crops, including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, peas, beans, flowers, herbs, kale, chard, and paste tomatoes. The CSA model provides economic stability for the farmers, allowing for better crop planning and marketing during the off-season, ultimately supporting a sustainable farming business.
