About the Farm
Background
Located in the rolling hills of the Appalachian range, this farm is known for its dedication to pesticide-free farming and humane animal husbandry. Charis, a North Carolina native, manages the animals and is a self-taught spinner, while Ben, a West Virginian and USAF veteran, oversees the maple syrup production and apiary. Their daughter Delaney enjoys working with the animals and exploring the woods. The farm has been featured in various publications and podcasts, highlighting their commitment to quality and ethical practices.
Practices
The farm employs rotational grazing for their Old Style American Tunis Sheep, a breed on the Livestock Conservancy List. They avoid the use of herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, or chemicals, ensuring a natural and healthy environment for their livestock. Maple syrup production is a labor-intensive, seasonal process managed by Ben, who taps the trees and cooks the sap. Honey is collected without pasteurization or adulteration, ensuring it remains as nature intended. The farm's practices emphasize self-sufficiency and responsible stewardship of the land.
The Rest
The farm offers freezer lamb and mutton, as well as award-winning fleeces processed into roving and yarn. Their maple syrup is available in quarts and pints, often selling out quickly. Honey is also available, collected and bottled using stainless steel extractors and food-grade materials. The farm's products can be found on their Etsy page and off the farm by prior arrangement. Charis has been published in SpinOff Magazine and Vogue Knitting Magazine, and the farm has been featured in local and regional farm publications, as well as various podcasts.
