About the Farm

Background

The Urban Canopy has developed a multifaceted approach to urban farming, with programs including an indoor farm, outdoor farm, LUCSA, farmers markets, and a Compost Club. The farm is situated on two acres in Englewood, on the south side of Chicago, and has grown to become a cornerstone of the local food movement by partnering with other Midwest farmers and good food producers.

Practices

The farm employs organic methods, avoiding synthetic pesticides and herbicides, and focuses on creating a balanced ecosystem through natural techniques. This includes fostering beneficial insects and using compost created on-site. The farm's practices emphasize biodiversity, with herb and flower beds, bee hives, and fruiting trees enriching the landscape.

The Rest

The LUCSA program offers a diverse array of produce and products by collaborating with local farmers and food businesses. Members receive weekly or biweekly shares, which can include add-ons like meat or cheese. The Compost Club provides residential and commercial composting services, completing the food cycle by allowing community members to compost their food scraps.
