About the Farm
Background
Thornfield CSA began in 2007 with an urge to keep bees and transitioned from conventional to organic farming. Initially, the farm focused on a large vegetable garden and buckwheat for bees. Over the years, the garden expanded, and the farm introduced various fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apple trees, and rhubarb. The farm has grown to include twenty-five acres of garden, field, and woods.
Practices
Thornfield CSA employs organic farming practices, avoiding pesticides and herbicides. The farm has seen increased biological diversity since transitioning from conventional methods. To mitigate weather impacts and extend the growing season, a large hoophouse was constructed in 2012, followed by two smaller ones. The farm focuses on crop rotation, soil improvement through composting and green manure, and uses various weed barriers and mulching techniques.
The Rest
Thornfield CSA offers spring, summer, and fall shares, with produce available for farm pickup or delivery to St. Paul. The farm encourages community involvement through CSA memberships, local farmer's markets, and volunteer opportunities. The farm's produce is known for its freshness and unique varieties, providing a connection to nature and the experience of growing and harvesting food.
