About the Farm
Background
Since 1989, Three Sisters Farm has been cultivating organic produce in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Known for its innovative use of a bioshelter, the farm has been a pioneer in integrating permaculture principles into its operations. The founder, Darrell Frey, has been instrumental in developing the farm into a model of ecological farming and education.
Practices
The farm employs principles of Permaculture Design to guide its development as an ecological system. The bioshelter, a solar greenhouse, is managed as an indoor ecosystem to enable year-round production. The farm also features a pond, gardens, multi-functional windbreaks, orchards, and perennial crops, all designed to work in harmony with the natural environment.
The Rest
In addition to farming, Three Sisters Permaculture Design offers consultation and education services on organic farming, greenhouse management, constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment, and ecological land use planning. The farm is not currently in operation and is not open for visitors, but it aims to transition to the next generation of farmers and permaculturists. Educational programs include permaculture courses, workshops, and gardening and cooking classes.
