About the Farm
Background
The UCSC Farm and the Alan Chadwick Garden have gained international recognition as premier sites for training and research in organic horticulture and agriculture. These sites serve as educational and research hubs for students, faculty, and researchers, showcasing a rich history of agricultural innovation and education.
Practices
The 3-acre Chadwick Garden features a diverse array of ornamentals, annual and perennial food crops, an extensive collection of fruit trees with over 120 apple varieties, and native California species. The 30-acre Farm includes handworked gardens, mechanically cultivated row crops, orchards, and research plots. The farm employs organic farming methods and integrates educational facilities such as the UCSC Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems, an agroecology laboratory, new greenhouses, and a visitors' center.
The Rest
The Farm also houses the offices of Life Lab, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing garden-based science and nutrition curricula for students from pre-K through high school, and FoodWhat, a youth empowerment and food justice program. Produce available includes stone fruit, citrus, pomme fruit, cane berries, blueberries, strawberries, root vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, alliums, squash, greens, cole crops, and flowers. The Farmstand opens on June 20, offering discounted organic produce through a Market Share program.
