About the Farm
Background
The UCSC Farm & Alan Chadwick Garden are integral parts of the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz. These sites have long served as hands-on training grounds for students enrolled in the six-month Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture, a program designed to impart practical skills in organic farming and gardening.
Practices
The farm and garden emphasize ecological horticulture, focusing on organic methods to cultivate a diverse array of crops. Students engage in sustainable farming practices that promote soil health, biodiversity, and ecological balance, ensuring that the land is nurtured and productive.
The Rest
Fresh organic produce is available twice a week through a CSA and at the Market Cart located at the base of the campus. CSA pickups occur on Tuesdays from 12 noon to 6 pm at the CSA shed, while the Market Cart operates on Fridays from 12 noon to 6 pm. Both services run from early June through late October or early November, depending on the weather.
