About the Farm

Background

On July 1st, 1991, Helen and Michael Cameron opened Uncommon Ground Coffeehouse & Café, starting with a small space that seated 45 guests. Over the years, they expanded their space multiple times, added a second location in Edgewater in 2007, and launched Greenstar Brewing, the first certified organic brewery in Illinois. Their journey included hosting performances by local artists and musicians, including a memorable show by Jeff Buckley in 1994.

Practices

Uncommon Ground has always prioritized high-quality ingredients and community engagement. They established the first certified organic rooftop farm at their Devon location and an organic sidewalk farm at their Clark location. Their brewery, Greenstar Brewing, uses local ingredients such as grain from Wisconsin, hops from Michigan, and yeast from Chicago, along with some produce from their own organic farm. They have also focused on sustainability through energy efficiency, waste management, water usage, pollution reduction, and sustainable furniture and fixtures. Both locations have been recognized as the 'Greenest Restaurant in America' in different years.

The Rest

Uncommon Ground has never had an advertising budget and relied on family loans and credit cards to finance their beginnings. They have been smoke-free from the start and have always aimed to create a community center that provides comfort and happiness. Their mission, 'Nourish Community, Nurture Nature,' reflects their commitment to local, regional, and organic food and beverage purchasing. They have received certification from the Green Restaurant Association and implemented various sustainable practices, including the use of solar thermal panels to heat water at both locations.
