About the Farm

Background

The history of Walnut Hill Farm began with a phone call in the spring of 2000, leading to the purchase and renaming of Elm Springs Farm. The farm, originally established in 1843, has a rich agricultural history, including a connection to the Blackburn family. The farm has undergone significant changes, including the removal of the old farmhouse and the restoration of the land using traditional livestock breeds.

Practices

Walnut Hill Farm employs a grass-based farming philosophy, raising heritage breeds like American Milking Devon cattle, Tamworth pigs, and Hog Island sheep. The farm avoids added hormones and antibiotics, except for treating sick animals, which are then not processed. Animals are rotated through pastures to optimize grass utilization and soil fertility. Pigs are raised using the Swedish deep bedding method, and the farm encourages wildlife through riparian areas. The farm's practices aim to reduce pollutants and improve land health.

The Rest

Walnut Hill Farm offers meat and eggs from their animals, available as individual cuts, halves, or whole animals, with all beef, pork, and lamb USDA inspected. Farm tours, including hayrides, are available by appointment, showcasing rotational and multi-species grazing and conservation methods. The farm is under a Conservation Easement with Stafford County to preserve it as a farm indefinitely.
