About the Farm
Background
Wander Creek Farm is rooted in familial land, now in its fourth generation of farming. Mary and Jonathan, partners and stewards of the farm, met aboard a sailing ship and eventually returned to Greene, New York, to continue the family legacy. The farm's history is intertwined with the efforts of Mary's great-grandfather Louis, grandmother Lucille, and father Douglas, who transitioned from dairy farming to cattle raising. The farm acknowledges the ancestral lands of the Haudenosaunee people, who farmed the area long before the current generations.
Practices
Wander Creek Farm employs no-till and no-spray methods to enhance soil health and biodiversity. The farm's philosophy centers on the interconnectedness of food, health, and the ecosystem. Mary and Jonathan's apprenticeship at Frith Farm in Maine, under the guidance of Daniel Mays, deeply influenced their approach to farming. They focus on building a thriving ecosystem through vegetable production and pasture-raised livestock, emphasizing practices that support and strengthen the diversity of life.
The Rest
Wander Creek Farm offers a Your-Choice CSA and sells produce at the Chenango Family Food Co-op and the Oxford Farmers Market. They accept SNAP/EBT and provide sliding scale options to ensure accessibility. The farm's land, known as 'The Flat,' is adjacent to the Genegantslet Creek, adding to its unique natural setting. Mary and Jonathan's journey from environmental education and nonprofit work to farming reflects their deep commitment to nature and community.
