About the Farm
Background
Weavers Way Co-op has been a staple in Northwest Philadelphia since 1973, evolving from a volunteer-run garden into a community-focused cooperative with multiple locations. The Mort Brooks Memorial Farm was established in 2000 by Norma Brooks and other co-op members in honor of Norma's husband, a longtime board member. This farm, along with Henry Got Crops Farm at Saul High School, forms the backbone of the Co-op's farming operations.
Practices
Weavers Way Farms operates on 6.5 acres, growing over 50 types of vegetables and fruits using environmentally responsible methods. The farms employ five full-time farmers during the growing season and emphasize hands-on learning through community programs. The Henry Got Crops Farm collaborates with W.B. Saul Agricultural High School, integrating students into all aspects of farm work, from fieldwork to applied research. The farm also produces high-quality compost from various organic waste sources.
The Rest
The farms supply fresh produce to the Weavers Way Co-op stores, a farmers market, and the Henry Got Crops CSA. Through the nonprofit Food Moxie, community members and students engage in planting, weeding, harvesting, and learning about healthy food production. The Mort Brooks Memorial Farm is part of the Awbury Agricultural Village, which hosts various farming ventures and a greenhouse for seedlings. Henry Got Crops hosts a farm market open to the public from May to November and serves as a CSA pickup location.
