About the Farm
Background
The White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, is located at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN. Known for its commitment to environmental and social justice, the center has become a hub for education and advocacy. Thousands of visitors come each year for farm tours and environmental education programs, making it a well-regarded institution in the Terre Haute area.
Practices
The farm operates on 300 acres of certified organic farmland. It employs greenhouses and high tunnels to extend the growing season and ensure early starts for crops. The farm also maintains a small apiary for raw honey production and a herd of about 35 alpacas, whose fiber is used to create handmade garments. The emphasis is on organic farming methods that nurture the soil and promote biodiversity.
The Rest
The White Violet Center offers a Farm Share program for local residents and participates in the Terre Haute Downtown Farmers' Market. The center also provides internship programs, volunteer opportunities, and hosts various events throughout the year. Visitors can explore the grounds, participate in educational programs, and learn more about sustainable farming practices.
