About the Farm
Background
Established in 1976 by Henry H. Stone and his wife Suzanne, the ranch has evolved through the years with Henry acquiring sole interest in 1983. Initially experimenting with various cattle breeds, Henry settled on a Black Angus & Hereford cross. After his retirement, he developed a successful purebred Angus herd, which continues to influence the ranch's beef production. His sons, Scott and Casey, joined the operation in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively, each taking on significant roles in managing the cattle operation and specialty food distribution. The family has been recognized for their environmental stewardship, winning the National Environmental Stewardship Award in 2008.
Practices
The ranch employs rotational grazing on their 7,500-acre hill ranch from November to May/June, allowing cattle to graze on native grasses and clovers. During the summer, cattle are moved to irrigated pastures to continue grazing on green grass and clovers, giving the hill ranch a rest period. The beef is dry-aged for 14 days to enhance tenderness and flavor. The ranch avoids the use of antibiotics, hormones, and artificial supplements, and any treated animals are removed from the grass-finishing program. Cattle are handled using low-stress, humane methods based on Temple Grandin's designs, and Quiet Wean Tags are used to reduce stress during weaning.
The Rest
The ranch sells their beef directly to the public at the Davis Farmers Market and offers bulk orders via their website. They also host agricultural tours, events, and serve as a film location. The family is deeply involved in the operation, with Scott's wife Karen managing direct marketing and distribution, and Casey's wife Angela coordinating tours and events.
