About the Farm
Background
Located near the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, this family-owned and operated farm has become known for its dedication to raising heritage breeds of pigs, including Gloucestershire Old Spots, Red Wattle, and Hereford pigs. These breeds, once common on American homesteads, are now rare and in danger of extinction. The farm also produces pecans and egg-laying chickens, offering their products through an on-farm store, local farmers markets, and direct email orders within Texas.
Practices
Utilizing holistic management and intensive pasture rotation, the farm ensures that its animals are raised in a natural environment. The pigs are free to breathe fresh air, bask in natural sunlight, and root in nutrient-rich soil, receiving daily mud baths. Their diet includes a variety of greens from the pasture, pecans, and they are finished on whey and cheese from a local cheesemaker. The farm's practices exclude the use of corn, soy, hormones, and antibiotics, resulting in healthier and more flavorful pork. Additionally, they raise grass-fed and finished beef, which is dry-aged and raised on open pastures without corn, soy, hormones, or antibiotics.
The Rest
Visitors can stay at the farm's Airbnb, a large seven-bedroom, three-bath home, perfect for experiencing serene Texas sunrises, sunsets, and quiet night skies. The farm also hosts Dark Sky Farm Dinners, where guests can enjoy a farm-gathered dinner, live music, and star viewing with a local astronomer. The farm emphasizes the health and welfare of its animals, ensuring they are humanely raised and free from factory farm conditions.
