About the Market
Background
Founded in 1988, the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association (PCFMA) is the largest organization of its kind on the West Coast and the oldest in the country. Over the years, it has grown to support over 275 California farmers and nearly 300 food artisans through its 50-plus weekly markets. PCFMA has developed state-of-the-art systems for tracking market activity and facilitating sales, including over $450,000 in annual sales through federal nutrition benefits.
Practices
PCFMA works exclusively with California farmers, ensuring that only California-grown produce is sold at its Certified Farmers’ Markets. The association creates economic opportunities for farmers through thriving markets and supports local food artisans in selling their unique products directly to consumers. An active multi-channel marketing effort reaches over 600,000 Bay Area residents monthly, enhancing community engagement and market visibility.
The Rest
PCFMA's mission is to empower California farmers to be successful in Bay Area communities. The organization also facilitates the Market Match program, which matches federal nutrition benefits (SNAP, known as CalFresh in California) to support healthy food access for low-income families.
