About the Farm

Background

Founded in 2006 by Colin and Karen Archipley, Archi’s Acres began with the dual mission of creating a sustainable organic produce business and providing entrepreneurial opportunities for veterans. Colin, a combat-decorated Marine Sergeant, and Karen, a former fashion industry entrepreneur, have since influenced veteran benefits and U.S. agriculture policy. The farm is known for its USDA-certified organic greenhouse operation, producing living basil, cut kale, chard, and other produce.

Practices

Archi’s Acres employs bio-hydroponics, utilizing organic tea nutrients mixed with filtered water in a closed-loop system that recirculates water through Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) growing tables. This method, provided by Innovative Growing Solutions, ensures water efficiency, using less water than an average home while producing crops in a fraction of the normal growing time. The farm's practices maximize natural resources and focus on local sales distribution channels.

The Rest

Archi’s Acres hosts the Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training (VSAT) program, a cooperative effort with the San Diego Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, designed to help returning veterans transition into the private sector with professional training in sustainable agriculture. The farm's products are available at Jimbo’s Naturally, Whole Foods Market, and several Certified Farmers Markets. Additionally, Archi’s Institute for Sustainable Agriculture has partnered with the University of Minnesota Crookston to offer a fully accredited agricultural certificate program.
