About the Farm
Background
Belle Farms began in 1997 when Steve and Marguerite Remde planted a vineyard on their property in Watsonville. Initially focused on wine grapes, they soon expanded to include seven acres of olives. Their passion for producing outstanding extra virgin olive oil and wine grapes has turned the farm into a collaborative family enterprise. Today, their three children assist with the harvest and farmers markets, and the Remdes also offer consultation services to other vineyards and orchards.
Practices
Belle Farms employs sustainable farming methods, including hand and mechanical cultivation to control weeds and gophers. They use registered organic products to manage pests and diseases, and maintain soil health through composting and cover crops. The orchard is equipped with a drip irrigation system powered by solar energy and an existing reservoir, eliminating the need for well water. Olives are hand-picked and cold-pressed within 24 hours to preserve their flavors and health benefits.
The Rest
Belle Farms offers a range of products including various olive oils, bath and beauty solutions, and wine grapes. Their olive oils can be purchased at local farmers markets, restaurants, retailers, and wineries. They also produce specialty items like Olio Nuovo and Lemon Olive Oil, made in the traditional Italian 'Agrumato' style. The farm's vineyards grow several varietals well-suited to the Santa Cruz Mountains, including Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and cool-climate Syrah.
