About the Farm

Background

Blue Barn Farm has been a welcoming destination for families and individuals looking to pick their own fresh berries and vegetables. Known for its high-quality sweet corn and a variety of lettuces and greens, the farm has become a staple in the local community. Visitors can find the farm's produce at local farmers markets in Hollidaysburg and Downtown Altoona, as well as at their self-serve on-farm market.

Practices

The farm employs sustainable growing methods, with a particular focus on transitioning their high tunnels to organic production. All lettuces and greens are grown using only organic inputs and organically approved pest control. Some tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are also cultivated in these high tunnels. For field crops, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is used to manage pest damage economically and with minimal hazard to people, property, and the environment. This approach aims to grow healthy crops with minimal disruption to agro-ecosystems.

The Rest

Blue Barn Farm offers a peaceful rural setting for visitors of all ages to enjoy picking nutritious berries. The farm market provides additional products to promote healthy eating. Sweet corn is available from early to mid-July, and fresh vegetables are available throughout the season. The farm is expanding its selection of Pick-Your-Own fruits and vegetables, with plans for more strawberries and cherry trees in the future. Customers are encouraged to call ahead for availability of freezing and canning orders.
