About the Farm
Background
For many years, Brad Bland has operated a farm stand that opens just before Thanksgiving, a tradition that began 44 seasons ago with the Bland and Mathis boys selling cabbages out of the back of a truck. The farm, located on the border between St. Johns and Putman Counties, has grown to attract customers from afar who come to load up on fresh produce.
Practices
The farm spans 65 acres and employs conventional farming methods to grow a variety of vegetables, including cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, Silver Queen corn, and various greens. All produce is handpicked without the use of large machines or equipment.
The Rest
The farm stand operates for eight months and closes in mid-June when temperatures rise, reopening in November. Additional items like raw honey from Ray Warren in Umatilla, Florida, and roasted peanuts are sourced from Plant City and local farmers. A blackboard at the stand is updated daily to inform customers of what is currently being grown on the farm.
