About the Farm

Background

Deep Hollow Farm is situated on a 53-acre site in Chester, Connecticut. The property, located on Deep Hollow Road, was once a thriving farm but fell into disuse over the past few decades. In 2012, efforts began to rejuvenate the land, starting with one acre of sustainably raised produce using organic methods. The farm plans to expand its vegetable gardens to five acres and has already begun selling fresh and processed vegetables onsite. The farm also offers lumber, cut, milled, and dried onsite, and plans to sell at the Chester farmers' market. The owners, Andrew Drabkin and Brian Hughes, both Yale graduates with a passion for the outdoors and food, have been instrumental in the farm's revival.

Practices

The farm employs organic methods in its cultivation practices and is committed to sustainable farming. They are members of CT NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) and have signed the farmer's pledge to provide sustainably raised food for the local community. The farm is also a member of the CT Farm Bureau. A significant effort is put into battling invasive species like bittersweet, autumn olive, Japanese barberry, multiflora rose, and mugwort to expand the growing area. The farm is no-till, which helps maintain soil health and reduce erosion.

The Rest

The team at Deep Hollow Farm includes Andrew Drabkin, Brian Hughes, Alexis Wilcox, and Dana Rozanski, each bringing a wealth of experience in gardening, composting, and earth sciences. The farm also has a lively group of dogs that add to the charm of the place. The farm hopes to add small barnyard animals in the future to provide locally raised organic eggs and meat and sees potential for an apiary, orchard, tree farm, vineyard, nursery plants, and a mushroom farm.
