About the Farm
Background
Elder Fire Farm Arts sprouted from nearly a decade-long germination process, dedicated to building a local and equipped foodshed with sustainable infrastructure. The farm is committed to the grassroots effort in Southwest Michigan to create a localized and transparent food system, fostering meaningful relationships between producers, consumers, and the land.
Practices
The farm employs organic methods to grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms, and raises free-range chickens for certified-organic eggs. They focus on a diverse poly-cultural approach, selecting plant varieties based on factors like seed availability, hardiness, flavor, visual appeal, storage potential, seed-saving potential, nutrient density, disease tolerance, and medicinal properties. Their practices emphasize transparency and accessibility, aiming to heal both bodies and the soil.
The Rest
The farm offers a 20-week CSA program with weekly shares of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and mushrooms, along with value-added products like jams, teas, lacto-fermented goods, dried fruits, and baked goods. They also share seasonal recipes and original artwork. CSA shares are available for a limited number of members, with pick-up locations in Kalamazoo and on the farm.
