About the Farm
Background
Copperhead Hill Farms Herdshare has been providing fresh, unprocessed whole cow's milk to its members, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of raw dairy. Known for their rich, creamy milk from primarily pure Jersey cows, the farm has built a reputation for quality and transparency. They are members of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund, ensuring their operations are legally sound and beneficial for both farmers and consumers.
Practices
The farm employs holistic management practices with a pastured herd that is grass-fed, receiving no grain whatsoever. Their cows graze on fresh pasture from spring until late fall and are provided with non-GMO alfalfa pellets, Chaffhaye, and organic supplements during milking. In winter, the cows are fed alfalfa/grass hay that is not sprayed or treated. The farm believes in the nutritional superiority of raw, unprocessed milk, which they argue supports healthy gut bacteria and overall well-being.
The Rest
Members of the herdshare program have access to weekly milk pickups, with delivery options available for an extra charge. The farm provides glass half-gallon bottles for milk storage, which are returned each week. They utilize a bulk chill tank to rapidly cool the milk to 36 degrees, preserving its flavor and shelf-life. The farm emphasizes the digestibility of their milk, with many members reporting improved tolerance compared to processed dairy. They also offer a thick cream line in their milk, perfect for making butter, cheese, or ice cream.
