About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2001 by Elise Bortz after her inspiring experiences on organic CSA farms in New York and New England, the farm has grown to serve a 325-member CSA program and attends the Saturday Carrboro Farmers’ Market. Entering its 24th year in production and CSA management in 2024, the farm has built a strong community with a retention rate of 75-85% annually.
Practices
The farm employs natural and sustainable farming methods, avoiding synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or fertilizers. They use materials approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), compost, beneficial insects, and manual labor. The farm emphasizes the importance of knowing your farmers and cooking with flavorful vegetables.
The Rest
The farm offers flexible CSA options, including box customization and a flower share add-on. Weekly newsletters provide recipes and storage information. The farm has a dedicated team, including Cason, the Pack Shed Manager and Crew Leader, who has been with the farm for seven years. The farm's produce is praised for its distinct flavor and quality by chefs and long-term CSA members alike.
