About the Farm
Background
The Jorgensen Family Foundation, Inc. was established in 1997 as a non-profit educational foundation. The centerpiece of the foundation is Hedgeapple Farm, a working model farm designed to advance the foundation's education and outreach mission. The farm has expanded to over 500 acres and is located just north of the historic village of Buckeystown, MD.
Practices
The farm's acreage is dedicated to permanent grassland, utilized as pasture and hay for a herd of Black Angus cattle. The farm implements best management practices to improve water quality in the Monocacy and Potomac Rivers, as well as the Chesapeake Bay. The cattle are raised on a natural diet of fresh pasture, hay, essential minerals, vitamins, and clean water, without the use of grain, feed antibiotics, growth hormones, or other feed additives.
The Rest
All grass-fed beef is direct marketed through the on-farm retail market. The farm highlights the nutritional benefits of grass-fed beef, including higher levels of CLA, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Omega-3 fats, and Beta-Carotene. Proceeds from the farm market support the foundation's educational and outreach efforts, benefiting other farm families through applied research and expertise.
