About the Farm
Background
In 1916, G. Gordon Mead purchased a diversified 100-acre farm in Tivoli, initially known as White Clay Creek Orchards. The farm shipped apples to NYC by boat. In 1959, Gordon's son Sid specialized in wholesale apple crops and expanded the variety of fruits. Chuck Mead joined in 1982, and together they diversified into retail markets and expanded produce offerings. The farm was renamed Mead Orchards in the late 1980s and has been a family-run operation for over a century.
Practices
The farm employs integrated pest management (IPM) practices to maintain ecological balance while producing high-quality fruit. Eco-Apple certification through Red Tomato underscores their commitment to sustainable practices. Bee hives from Ray Tousey support pollination, and the farm produces honey. Apple cider and cherry-apple cider are made from their own fruit and pasteurized using UV light instead of heat.
The Rest
Visitors can enjoy pick-your-own fruit from June to October, including strawberries, cherries, blueberries, peaches, apples, and pumpkins. The farm also sells value-added products like applesauce and tomato sauce. Distribution is local, partnering with CSAs, food hubs, restaurants, and farmers markets. The farm offers an authentic Hudson Valley experience with beautiful views and a variety of seasonal activities.
